Highlands Intermediate Earns Gold Council of Excellence for 2023

Student Council induction ceremony
Highlands Intermediate Student Council Receives Top National Award
Pearl City, Hawai’i (May 15, 2023)—For its exemplary record of leadership, service and activities that improve the school and community, the Highlands Intermediate Student Council has been recognized as a 2023 National Gold Council of Excellence by the National Student Council (NatStuCo). The NatStuCo program is supported by its parent organization, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
Highlands Intermediate Student Council 22-23 did an outstanding job by creating an amazing school year of awesome events and activities that brought a sense of normalcy back after the COVID lockdown that involved all 830 students, staff and teachers!  From the Welcome Back Assembly “Fantastic Students and Where to Find Them!” to Club Rush to Fall Dance “The Glow Ball” to Highlands Haunted House 10 “The Escape from Azkaban!” to Valentine’s Dance “Love Through the Looking Glass” to the most recent Fun Fridays - the Highlands Student Council 22-23 did it all!  We couldn’t be more proud of these fine young students for the extraordinary service and leadership that they provided all year long…
“Exceptional student councils are a hallmark of exceptional schools,” said NASSP CEO Ronn Nozoe. “The [school name] council has taken student leadership to the next level, creating a culture promoting scholarship and citizenship that resonates far beyond their team. I’m delighted to recognize their hard work with the National Gold Council of Excellence Award for their commitment to service, leadership and uplifting the voices of their peers.”
A student council must meet a variety of criteria to earn the National Council of Excellence Award. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings and a democratic election process, the councils must have demonstrated successful sponsorship and participation in activities such as leadership development and service to the school and community. Learn more about the award here.
