Free and Reduced Meal Program
Free and Reduced Meal Applications are now available online at ezmealapp.com. Please do not submit a paper application if you complete an online application. Please visit the Free and Reduced Meal Application link for more details.
All meal payments will be completed electronically through the Meal Tracker system. No cash payments will be accepted in the cafeteria. This program will allow the purchase of one breakfast, and one lunch per day at the meal price set up for Full Pay, Reduced, or Free qualifying status. Parents or Guardians may monitor their student's account balance through the online service "ezSchoolPay". Students may also come to the office to inquire about their lunch balance. Information regarding the student's account will not be given over the telephone. No lunch loans will be issued. Our school does not receive special funding from the Department of Education in order to provide lunch money loans.
Unpaid Meal Charge In accordance with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutritional Service (FNS) policy SP 46-2016: Unpaid Meal Charges - Local Meal Charge Policies and Hawaii Senate Bill 423, the following is the Department's policy:
Students who are unable to pay their meal at the point of service shall be allowed to incur (meal only) charges for the first 21 days of school;
The parent/guardian shall be responsible to repay all meal charges that are incurred during the first 21 days of the school year; and
After the first 21 days, unpaid meal charges should not exceed the cash equivalent of seven days. Listed below are the total allowable chargeable amounts based on eligibility:
Reduced price student's meal charge limit is $4.90.
Full Paid student's (K-8) meal charge limit is $25.20.
Additionally, schools shall disallow the charging of ala carte or extra items by any child with a negative balance, regardless of the child's eligibility status.
All negative balances must be paid by the end of the school year.
Deposits into Meal Accounts
You will be allowed to deposit money into your child's account using a personal check, money order or cash. During the 4th quarter, only cash deposits will be accepted. Note: Returned checks for insufficient funds will be charged a service fee of $25.00 per returned check, and only cash will be accepted thereafter. Checks payable to Highlands Intermediate School.
Payment envelopes will be dropped into a meal payment box located on the counter in the school front office. Your deposit will be processed and the money will be available for use by your child on the following day. Please plan to make a deposit before the 1st day your child attends school.
The suggested minimum deposit amounts are $10.00 for full pay students and $3.00 for reduced meal students, the maximum amount is $150.00. Students eligible for free and reduced price meals are entitled to one breakfast and one hot meal. If any student purchases an entree meal, a second meal, extra milk, water or juice they will be charged at the per item price regardless of eligibility providing there is money in his/her account.
Paymenst may be made through the online service "ezSchoolPay". ezSchoolPay provides a secure system for parents/guardians to make payments for the student meal account (fee applies), set low balance alerts and review the student's buying history. Go to www.ezshoolpay.com
Effective 07/01/2015 second student lunch is $5.50.
Payment Procedure for initial payment:
Fill out the Meal Payment Deposit envelope.
Insert cash/check/money order and deposit slip into Ziploc bags provided at the counter.
Place in Meal Payment box located on the counter in the front office.
Lost and Misused ID
There is a $5.00 charge for replacement of any lost, damaged, stolen, or defaced ID card. The $5.00 replacement fee is non-refundable.
If the card is lost or forgotten at home, he/she will be allowed to use a temporary lunch card for that day only, provided that there is money in his/her account.
